SHADOW Wants to Harness the Power of Your Dreams

Electricity, Frankenstein’s monster, nonviolent resistance, laser technology—all of these were conceived in dreams. Sleep is where some of humanity’s most incredible creations got their start. Yet, we forget 95% of our dreams within five minutes of waking up.

That's a significant problem. To attempt to solve it, then, is a very lofty goal, and yet that's just what the creators of SHADOW want to do. How will they do it?

Through an app, of course.

SHADOW will be available in the form of a mobile app, and will provide two primary functions: first, it will wake you up. It won't be a typical alarm, though. SHADOW will feature an escalating alarm that uses motion technology to determine precisely when to wake you up for maximum dream recall. Some apps already do this, but the SHADOW team claims to have access to better research which will help them do the job more precisely. The alarm will even adapt to your personal sleeping habits.

After waking you up, SHADOW will give you a quick way to capture your dream while it's still fresh. You can do this in three ways: type or speak into the app, or answer some questions. Speaking into the app is a particularly intriguing prospect; writing requires a certain clarity, and the closer you get to mental clarity, the further your dream will be pushed down into your subconscious. So, speaking may allow a more direct link between your subconscious and the recording of your dreams.

The goal of the SHADOW team is indeed incredibly lofty: they want to pick up "where Freud and Jung left off." They will organize the data collected by the app and use it to uncover trends in dreamers the world over. Essentially, SHADOW wants to tap into the subconscious of the world.

All through an alarm clock on your phone.

Right now, SHADOW is (forgive the pun) but a dream. The project is being Kickstarted, and as of this writing, they've raised just under $60,000 of a $50,000 goal. SHADOW will, then, become a reality, but only as a dream recorder, unless an increased goal of $100,000 is reached. If the project reaches that goal, the smart alarm will be built. Interestingly, you can affect which platform the app gets built for first: when you back the Kickstarter, you can specify a platform. Whichever platform raises the most money will see the first iteration of SHADOW.
