Facebook isn't exactly known for its ability to elicit contemplative, nostalgic smiles. In its 10-year history, Big Blue's become known—and maligned—for its shallow representation of emotion, and of people themselves.
It looks like it's beginning to buck that trend, recognizing the need to be more by being less. Perhaps that's because the social network is feeling the heat from smaller, more focused apps. Whatever the reason, Facebook seems to be in pivot mode, and the new direction looks quite enticing.
That said, there is something to be said for the old approach (which, in a nutshell, was 'be everything for everyone'). That philosophy led to Facebook becoming, far and away, the largest connection medium the planet's ever seen, after all, and as a result, Zuck & Co. have a huge amount of data stored in the form of photos and personal updates. Facebook decided to do something great with that data, turning it into a personalized one-minute video of your time on Facebook, past to present. It's a small gesture, but one that will elicit the afore-mentioned nostalgic smiles- I promise you that.
