The concept and driving force behind Sssimpli is constantly evolving, but the mission is always the same. That little tagline at the top of the page ("a conscious approach to geekery") isn't just a placeholder- it's also a reminder of my core mission, of why I started Sssimpli in the first place. I'm a big tech blog reader, and my feed reader is filled with the usual suspects: Lifehacker, ReadWrite, The Next Web.
Those sites are valuable in their own right, but I wanted to stray a bit from the pack. For starters, I don't write about things I don't love. That means that, not only do I not write negative reviews, I don't even write about things I like- only things I love make the cut. I also don't post very frequently. Keeping up with online news sources is already a struggle, and I don't want to add to that problem. Instead, I want to be the deep breath you take in the midst of a fit of shallow breathing.
All this is to say: I'm not satisfied with writing about just tips and tricks and apps. I also want to highlight web entities that don't really fall under a certain category- things you can't download, but must simply experience. That said, I'm starting a new feature here which will do just that. I'll call it Spotlight, and you'll be able to find each Spotlight entry under that category in the navigation links. I may spotlight a web magazine, or a project, or even a simple website.
To kick things off, I want to Spotlight Like Knows Like, a brilliant mini-documentary project from photographer Marije Kuiper and filmmaker Bas Berkhout. Frankly, I'm a bit appalled that I just discovered this project, because it's simple, moving, and brilliant. Kuiper and Berkhout follow various creatives around for a day, capturing them in their element, and overlay moments throughout that day with the subject's own meandering thoughts. The result is a profound look at an individual life- part inspiration, part biography, all beautiful- and each will take up about six minutes of your time.
To date, the team has made films for illustrator Jessica Hische, photographer Ike Edeani, painter Kelsey Brookes, and nine others. My favorite, since you asked, is their most recent with designer Tina Roth Eisenberg (of Swiss-Miss fame).
LikeKnowsLike is a beautiful project that will, at the very least, inspire you while telling you a wonderful story.
